Predators is a sequel and it wants Ah-nuld

Clint Morris over at Moviehole was able to get in contact with someone close to Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios, and apparently what was once believed to be a prequel is now more or less officially a sequel.

Well, sequel/reboot.

The goal is to act as if Predator 2 never existed and just have a continuation from the original film. I’m one of the vast, vast, minority who didn’t mind the second movie so I don’t know how I feel about this. The studio also really wants Schwarzenegger back as Dutch. They’ve, “reached out to Arnie’s [camp]. But they haven’t had a response yet.”

Obviously it’d be understandable seeing that’s he’s running a state and all (even if that state is in a rather unfortunate state financially). But wouldn’t it be bad-fucking-ass if a miracle happened and we all get a true continuation of McTiernan’s Predator? Obviously I wouldn’t expect Ah-nuld to stick around as the main character, but it’d be nice to have him in a cameo to keep the continuity straight.

You know what’s bar none the best part revealed by this so called insider?

“The script is terrific…I hear. It’s partly the old Predators script Rodriguez did, but mostly new stuff by [Alex] Litvak. And it’s violent – like the original. Everybody here at [name removed] has pointed out how much better it is than [Paul W.S] Anderson’s abomination. Doesn’t sound like there’s any reason to worry”.

Besides Ah-nuld, I guess the biggest dilemma now is whether or not Rodriguez will direct the movie himself or pass it on to a colleague.

Rodriguez dumps Barbarella, I celebrate

This gave me my first pre-pubescent woody. I was frightened.

It was all sunshines and rainbows and unicorn steak feasts for Robert Rodriguez ever since announcing he’d taken over the Predator franchise. I wanted that movie to happen, and I’m sure a bunch of others did as well. So, to expedite that process, he’s had to dump his Barbarella movie! After spending the better part of two years setting this up, he had to drop the project because his German financiers demanded he filmed and edited the entire movie in the country.

And we all know how much Rodriguez hates those filthy Germans!

Okay, he doesn’t. More that he likes filming near his wife and kids and couldn’t fathom being away from them that long. So, potentially cool remake out of the way, I hope he puts the majority of his attention on Predator after finishing up his other potentially cool flicks, Sin City 2 and Machete.

I see this as a win-win, really. Although I appreciated the original Barbarella in that way only pre-pubescent boys discovering it on late night TV can, I wouldn’t exactly say I enjoyed the movie. It was on a couple years back and I just couldn’t stand it, really. I also know there are a lot of die hard Barbarella fans out there who loathe a remake. So, with the movie dumped Rodriguez won’t have to face the scrutiny and Predator fans can have an earlier relaunch than expected!

Win-win.

Rodriguez rebooting Predator franchise!

Fox had done something very special when they green-lit the Aliens Vs Predator movies – they effectively franchicided two fan favourite properties with one stone, alienating millions in the process and creating a perception for the new generation of geek that these once frighteningly awesome movie monsters , MTV induced garbage.

Well, news has gotten out that Fox may have finally seen the light of reason. Not only is the next Predator movie have nothing to do with aliens, it’ll also be helmed by Robert Rodriguez. Now, I know Rodriguez is a more polarizing name than even Tarantino, but having him control the project will mean these very important things:

You can bet your ass he’s going for the hard R-rating Predator built itself on. Not the PG-13 shit of Paul WS Anderson. And yes, I know AVP Requiem was R-rated, but that was too awful to even be considered a “film”.
This man is a fan of the franchise. He even scipted a grandiose Predator 3 back in the day that he had to ditch because it simply would have cost too much money.
The new movie is “Predators”, with the ‘s’. Fuck yes for multiple killing machines running around.
Hey, he isn’t exactly a hack no name director like “The Brothers Strause.”

I fully believe that if the franchise is to be resurrected there’s little out there that’s better than having Rodriguez doing the CPR. At the very least it’ll be a very pretty looking, blood soaked affair.

Hopefully, no Predator/human romantic underpinnings ala AVP.

“I’m going to be able to shoot my upcoming ‘Machete’ here, a sci-fi action film called ‘Nerverackers,’ a re-boot of the ‘Predator’ series called ‘Predators,’ and a couple of smaller movies called ‘Sin City 2′ and ‘The Jetsons,’” he told the press in a Texas press conference.
